As always it will cost you more to start but will save you money long term and will help the environment as you will be consuming less energy.
For Alterations and Additions, any new lighting installations must have energy efficient lamps such as compact fluorescents, in at least 40% of new light fittings.
Many new homes and alterations and additions use large numbers of low voltage halogen downlights. A lot of people mistakenly think that low voltage is low energy, but nothing could be further from the truth. It is now possible to replace these energy guzzlers with energy saving compact fluorescent (CFL) downlights.
Energy efficient CFL lighting is a low cost way to help get to the BASIX target, with a high financial return for households. By replacing thirty 50W halogen downlights, households will save around $340 every year in electricity bills. They will also save a lot of time changing lamps, as the CFLs last about 15,000 hours, and only have to be replaced every 7 to 8 years.
